Tarot Urban Myths

I love hearing about how people introduce Tarot, frequently it is the difference between them learning from TikTok or taking the time to study, delve into the art and respect the journey these amazing cards have been on through their existence. Every experienced Tarot reader will have their views, but here is my take on what often holds us back from starting to read. This is called the Urban Myths of Tarot!

Tarot is Fortune Telling! Tarot is an effective instrument for enhancing self-awareness and empowering individuals to take control of their lives. Tarot tells you about the energies around you and the decisions you may make. You ALWAYS have free will to ignore or reject anything said during a reading.

You cannot buy your first deck of Tarot cards!! Choose cards that you understand and connect with. A vast variety is available, so take advantage of delighting in imagery and what appeals to you, as you will be reading them!

Second-hand cards are fine, provided you ensure they are all there!! You need to cleanse them thoroughly so as not to bring in any unwanted energies. There will be a future blog post about cleansing and protection.

There are bad tarot cards?? My first mentor always kept hers in the shed. You will know. Mine can be naughty and get the hump. Your 78 friends are in your pocket; ensure they stay friends. They are not evil but can attract negative energies, so always cleanse them or keep a crystal such as clear quartz with them.

You must be psychic to read the cards. Everyone is intuitive, but you need to learn and develop this. ‘We can all run a marathon, but maybe not tomorrow. ’ You need to know the basics, just as when you learn to read, you do not immediately jump to Dickens if you have not learnt you’re A, B, C’s!

You cannot read tarot for yourself!! Great way to start learning and continue with a card of the day or a monthly overview. Excellent for indecision. Be warned and listen/feel the answer, don’t keep asking until you get the answer you want!! The card of the day will help you focus.

The Devil card and the Death card often freak people out. They do not mean what you assume at face value. Hence, start to learn to read correctly.

No one can touch your cards if you are reading for others, as it is often difficult to achieve this. Same with shuffling work with what you find achieves the best results. I use vibrant cards so the person you are reading for feels engaged. Also, keep my private ones that are for my use.

A bit of General Information

Tarot reflects your higher self’s wisdom, not random chance.
Origins of Tarot – how long have you got??? There is an endless argument about the Egyptian origins of the Major Arcana. More about this in a future blog post, it will be long, as I love talking about the history of Tarot and all the different influences.

Work with tarot, and then tell me if you feel the Majors are playing cards. In my book, I give a good tarot history or join one of my courses. If you are at an event and cannot decide who to go for a reading with ….. ask the tarot reader what the word Tarot means???? That will give you a good indication if they understand what they are doing.

Rota – Wheel of life
Tar–Pole star guidance
Tar Rot Royal Way, the progression
Tarrocco/Tarrochi – some of the original names.

Gaining knowledge about tarot is an ongoing process that cannot be achieved in a single day. I still learn something new most days about Tarot, which is constantly a source of magic and mystery. Take your time, enjoy the journey and do it in manageable chunks. It is not a race but a lifetime commitment that, if you embrace, you will love.
